The Mental Health Committee is excited to bring a number of educational opportunities to educators and school counselors during the 2018-2019 school year. There are a variety of opportunities that include full-day professional development, online modules, a book study, Mental Health First Aid and more. Learning About Trauma-Sensitive Schools

 

Participants will be expected to work through the Trauma-Sensitive Schools Modules from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (https://dpi.wi.gov/sspw/mental-health/trauma/modules) at their own pace with 4 face-to-face meetings via Zoom to discuss groups of the modules.

 

This class focuses on understanding trauma and how it impacts students and their learning as well as how schools and classrooms can become trauma-sensitive, integrating best practices into their already existing initiatives, discipline procedures, and MTSS process.

 

Who: School Counselors, Teachers, AEA Staff

 

When: Students work through the modules and participate in Zoom discussion groups from 3:15 - 4:15 p.m. on the following dates:

• Monday February 4, 2019

• Monday, March 4, 2019

Fostering Resilient Learners Strand

 

This strand consists of a book study, one-day face-to-face workshop and an independent study course on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) resources. The descriptions are below.

 

Section Descriptions:

 

Fostering Resilient Learners Book Study (Section Number: 250458): 
Participants will read the book and participate in zoom sessions to cultivate a trauma-sensitive learning environment to help students feel safe in the classroom and help their learning at all levels. This is a strengths-based approach to aid student learning. Zoom sessions will be held on November 6, December 18, February 12 and April 30th from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. (6 hours)

Universal Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Supports (Section Number: 250453): Participants will attend a day-long face-to-face training in Elkader on January 24, 2019. The day will include four sessions: General Adverse Childhood Experiences overview; restorative justice in an effort to create a more positive learning environment; self-care for the educator and strategies for the classroom including mindfulness and yoga with Molly Schreiber; review and evaluation of social-emotional learning curriculum resources. (6 hours)

SEL Resources Exploration (Section Number: 250459): Self-study of participant-selected SEL resources. This is an extension of the Universal SEL Supports section. Participants will choose an SEL resource or resources to review and complete questions and activities to determine the usefulness of the resource in their setting. (3 hours)

 

Licensure Renewal Credit Available: Participants must take all 3 section for a total of 15 hours to obtain the credit.

Individual Behavior Interventions

 

This workshop will provide information on a variety of interventions that can be used with individuals to prevent and reduce problem behavior and increase instructional time in the classroom. This is open to all schools, and a requirement for Tier 3 PBIS Schools.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

 

The goal of Youth Mental Health First Aid is to increase mental health literacy. Like
CPR training helps a non-medical professional assist an individual following a heart
attack, Youth Mental Health First Aid training helps an individual who doesn’t have
clinical training assist a youth experiencing a mental health crisis. In both situations, the goal is to help support an individual until appropriate professional help arrives, with the added underlying intention to promote mental health literacy.
